What is Emdr Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy designed to help individuals process and heal from trauma, anxiety, and emotional distress. Developed in 1987, EMDR remains a highly effective treatment for mental health challenges, including PTSD and panic disorders. By using guided sensory input, EMDR helps rewire the brain’s response to distressing experiences, allowing individuals to break free from emotional stagnation and regain control over their well-being.

At its core, EMDR works by restoring the brain’s natural ability to process emotions. It helps regulate emotional responses, reorganize distressing memories, and rebalance neurotransmitters that influence mood. By unlocking these blocked pathways, EMDR empowers individuals to move forward with clarity, resilience, and renewed emotional strength.

Is Emdr right for me?
EMDR therapy is designed for individuals struggling with distressing memories, trauma, anxiety, or emotional blocks that seem difficult to overcome. If you experience symptoms like flashbacks, panic attacks, overwhelming emotions, or persistent negative beliefs about yourself, EMDR could be an effective solution. It is particularly beneficial for those dealing with PTSD, phobias, panic disorders, grief, and unresolved trauma, whether from childhood experiences, accidents, or other life events.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses on reprocessing distressing memories using guided eye movements or other forms of sensory input. This helps the brain “unlock” stuck emotional responses, allowing you to process experiences in a healthier way without reliving the pain. If you feel like past experiences are still affecting your present, EMDR might be the breakthrough you need.
At Revive Psychology, we can assess your individual needs and help determine if EMDR is the right path for you.

How Does It Work?
EMDR therapy helps individuals process and overcome trauma by using bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, hand tapping, or audio cues, to mimic the brain’s natural processing during REM sleep. This therapy facilitates deep reprocessing of traumatic memories while the person is awake, making distressing events feel less overwhelming over time. During a session, the individual focuses on a specific negative event while engaging in guided stimulation, allowing the brain to reprocess the trauma and change the associated thoughts, feelings, and beliefs.
EMDR typically consists of eight phases, with each session lasting 60 to 90 minutes, gradually reducing emotional distress and promoting healing. At Revive Psychology, we customize EMDR therapy to meet your unique needs, ensuring a safe and supportive healing process. Whether you’re dealing with trauma, anxiety, or persistent emotional blocks, EMDR offers a powerful way to break free from the past and regain emotional balance.

What To Expect?
In the initial sessions, your therapist will take the time to understand your history, identify key issues, and teach you grounding techniques to manage emotions. This preparation phase ensures that you feel safe and supported before beginning the reprocessing work.
During the core of EMDR, your therapist will guide you to recall a distressing memory while using bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or auditory cues). This helps the brain reprocess the memory, reducing its emotional intensity and allowing new, healthier perspectives to emerge. You don’t have to relive the trauma in detail—EMDR helps shift the brain’s response so the memory no longer triggers distress.
After each session, you may feel lighter, more reflective, or emotionally tired as your brain continues to process the experience. Over time, you’ll notice a significant reduction in emotional distress, greater resilience, and a stronger sense of control over past experiences. At Revive Psychology, we ensure that every step of the EMDR journey is tailored to your needs, providing a safe and effective path to healing.
